The California anti-nuclear movement of the 1970s-1980s was headquartered in San Francisco, and many of its most active participants made San Francisco their home. The campaigns were directed against PG&E's Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant near San Luis Obispo, against the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories (where nuclear weapons are designed and perfected), the Bohemian Grove private resort near the Russian River in Sonoma County where the corporate and government elite gather annually, and the Vandenberg Air Force Base in central California where missile and jet plane storage and testing take place.
