You can't tell the history of the Haight Ashbury without addressing the development of Golden Gate Park, especially of the Panhandle. The Panhandle is actually the oldest of the parks; at one time it was John McLaren's arboretum. Every bush, every tree, even the Eucalyptus (now politically incorrect non-native species) were first planted in the Panhandle to see how they survived. Thus the Panhandle has the oldest trees in Golden Gate Park and 21 varieties of Eucalyptus.
Baker & Hamilton started in a tent near the "Mormon Island" claim above Fort Sutter east of Sacramento in 1849, supplying "miners' hardware": picks, shovels, knives, saws, hammers, axes and nails... By 1860 B&H had a thriving block-long store in Sacramento, and in 1867 they opened their first store in San Francisco, down on Front Street. After merging with Pacific Hardware & Steel Co. in 1918, they moved into 700 7th Street at the corner of the evolving Mission Bay area.
Harrison Street in the Mission was for most of its life a major thoroughfare for rail traffic, as the San Jose-San Francisco line ran on it, as did many freight trains, including one that went right by the factory above to pick up finished new Ford autos as they rolled off the assembly line. This area of the northeast Mission was contiguous with the Harrison Street corridor in the South of Market, which was also very industrialized.

July 9, 1959: The people in the area between 22nd and 23rd Sts. and Treat Ave. and Folsom St. have a train in their backyards. It's the Southern Pacific's small branch line, the last of it 'in-town' service for a few businesses there. Train-loving kids in the neighborhood merely have to peer over their back fence to watch 'Casey Jones' at the switch engine, jostling a few freight cars into position. The branch line, which ends at 23rd and Folsom Sts., is part of the historic 'Old Main Line,' the San Francisco-San Jose Railroad, established in 1863. The line was absorbed by SP in 1870, and was operated until 1907. At that time it was discontinued when Bayshore yards here filled in for a shorter route to the Peninsula.

Fox Plaza, 1390 Market Street.

The Fox Theater was America's greatest all-time movie palace. Occupying the entire block bounded by Market, Hayes, and Polk Streets, it harbored 4,561 seats surrounded by the ultimate in classic movie-house opulence. It's gigantic neon sign spelled out F-O-X in letters big enough to be read from the Ferry Building at the end of Market Street.

But in 1963, real estate philistines bought the property, tore down the most magnificent building in San Francisco, and erected a high-rise eyesore in its place.

Plenty of San Franciscans cursed the idiocy of those responsible. But one San Franciscan went further. On the night of the Fox Theater's final show, as the dying Wurlitzer cords echoed through the cavernous theater, future Satanist leader Anton LaVey, then the Fox organist, thundered out a formal imprecation against the owners and the property. The Satanist's curse is sometimes blamed for shoddy construction and other issues that beset the new tower from its opening.

Few remember that across the street once stood a 19th century phenomenon, a circular Panorama building that presented historical events on a 360-degree circular canvas called a Cyclorama.
